2020 Swim Season Update
Message from AST Swim Team Rep to AST Red Tide Families on May 8, 2020
This email is going out to all of our 2019 Red Tide families...we hope that you're all doing well during these unusual times. Recently the AST Pool Board sent out a message about the pool's overarching plans for opening this summer which affects our plans for the swim season. In addition to aligning with the pool's plans, our swim season is also impacted by decisions made at the league level. As news travels fast, I know that many of you are already aware that last night we were notified of the Northern Virginia Swim League's (NVSL) decision to cancel the 2020 NVSL swim season. While the news is very disappointing, please know that it was a very difficult decision to make and was made in the very best interest of everyone's safety.
What does this mean for our AST Red Tide swimmers? We will work with the AST Pool Board as events unfold and decisions are made regarding the pool's general opening and mode of operation for the upcoming season. If there is any reasonable and safe way to provide swim practices then we will certainly explore the possibility. If we're not able to physically come together as a team this summer, please help us with any ideas you may have as far as maintaining team connections throughout the summer and how we may recognize our seniors who will not have the opportunity to swim their last hoorahs.
Thank you in advance for your patience and be safe everyone!
2019-2020 Winter Swim Program
With the end of the summer season comes the planning and transition to our winter training sessions. This program has been in place for over 25 years. Our goal this year is to continue to build upon the amazing success of our swimmers over the last few seasons. The program is designed to build on the great results realized during the summer swim program and prepare us for an even more competitive season in summer 2020. The coaching team will again be led by Coach Kristin, who will prepare the training plan, although she won’t be present every week. She will be assisted by Mr. Duong, with assistant coaches Ryan Charest and Umi Herman. It also looks like Josh Perry, who hosted some of the stroke and turn clinics this summer, will stop by on occasion.
The sessions are run as group practices, not individual swim lessons. If you have an entry-level swimmer, we can’t provide individual swim lesson based on the limited space.
Location: We will again practice at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) on Little River Turnpike across from Guinea Road. We are renting three lanes per practice session. The program is open to anyone up to rising high school seniors.
Registration: Click on the "Register Now" button. It'll take you to a screen that will have the registration for Winter Swim. All registration forms and payment can be made online...nothing to mail.

Division 10 Championship Meet
Thank you to all of our parent volunteers for helping this morning. We can't possibly host a large event like Divisionals without everyone's support and participation.
And, what about our swimmers? WOW! Swimmers who placed 1st-6th in their events will receive their medals at the banquet tomorrow. Overall, we had 5-1st place finishes, 4-2nd place, and 8-3rd place. And, the following swimmers had potential All Star qualifying times:
- Celie: Girls 8&U 25M Backstroke
- Evan: Boys 7&U 25M Breaststroke
- Carmina: Girls 9-10 50M Backstroke & 10&U 100M IM
- Tommy: Boys 13-14 50M Breaststroke
We won't know until later this evening after all Divisional meet results are in and the All Star seeding meeting concludes, whether or not our swimmers will make the final cut BUT, whatever the final results are, we are super proud of all our swimmers.
We don't know if turkey's on the banquet menu but Tommy just served one up this morning with a 3rd and final season record of 35.03 in the Boys 13-14 50M Breaststroke! He's moving on to 15-18 next year so he wanted to make sure his name stays up on that record board for a while. Congratulations again Tommy! Somebody get that kid a nice, juicy turkey leg.
Tennis Camp - Summer Session II
Signups are now open for the weekly summer tennis camp. This camp is from 9-12 in the morning and has more focus on skill and improvement than the current one hour program. Players will have more time to learn the nuances of each stroke but also get to participate in some of the fun and games that come with a summer camp. The camp is $125 per week.
Signups are not available through Swimtopia, to sign up contact coach Dylan at (703) 955-0161 or firstname.lastname@example.org.

Congratulations to our 10&Under Swimmers and Little Tides!
What a HOT but fun day at Woodley! Our young swimmers truly represented the team and were in top form today. We had some newbies who experienced the Mini Meet for the first time so that was quite a treat...please join us again next year!
Complete results are posted under the event in the calendar but here are some highlights for our top 1-3 finishers who earned Mini Meet medals this year:
Boys 13-14 100M Medley Relay Breaks Pool Record
After an entire season of chasing the 2016 record time of 59.55, the Boys 13-14 100M Medley Relay team of Charlie Duong, Tommy Nugen, Nathan Tran, and Matthew Kim FINALLY did it with a time of 58.36! They made us wait until the last meet and their last opportunity as next year 3 of them will be swimming in the 15-18 age group. Congratulations boys!!
More Highlights from A@LH Meet
Recordbreakers Doubling Down...
- Mackayla Du beat her own record in the Girls 15-18 50M Backstroke with a new time of 33.24.

Mackayla and Tommy Nugen have one more opportunity at Divisionals for a turkey!
We may not have won this meet against LH but the score was close and our swimmers have been improving with every meet. And, we have swimmers who are tracking against Individual All Star times - Carmina Carreon in the Girls 9-10 50M Backstroke and Evan Murphy in the Boys 8&Under 25M Breaststroke.
Let's keep that Red Tide Spirit going into this final week leading up to Divisionals and wish our swimmers the best of luck as they pursue their personal best times, individual wins at Divisionals, and possible turns at Individual All Stars!
Grace Nary started swimming in 2006 when she was 5. She graduated from Bishop O’Connell High School and swam for DJO for 4 years. Next year, Grace will be studying Computer Science at George Mason University.
Grace is the last of 5 children graduating from swim team after 21 years of pool membership.
Patrick Kearney started swimming with AST in 2016. Graduated from Falls Church High School. He swam for his high school swim team his freshman and senior year. He was also a member of the tennis team for three years. Next year, Patrick is going into the School of Business at George Mason University.
MORE Pool Records for our Red Tide Swimmers!
Our Red Tide Swimmers are AMAAAAZZZZIIING! They're breaking records left and right! The ink hadn't even dried on our Girls 15-18 200M Medley Relay record from the Relay Carnival when it was broken again this morning by the relay team of Mackayla, Elizabeth, Vi, and Kia. Looks like Vi wanted her name back up on that board! ;-)
And, what about Tommy Nugen? He beat his own 50M Breaststroke time of 35.85 with a time of 35.74 this morning. He's got the pool record...now let's make it to All Stars!
We have a number of swimmers who are tracking against Individual All Star qualifying times. Keep practicing and stay focused! We're rooting for all of you!!

2019 Summer Swim Team
Welcome back to all our returning AST Red Tide swimmers and families! We are happy that you have come back to what we consider to be one of the best summer swim programs in the Northern Virginia Area. We would like to welcome all our new AST Red Tide swimmers and parents. Thank you for joining us this year – we know that you and your family will make a great addition to our team.
We are, once again, in the Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL) Division 10. This year we'll be competing against Rutherford (R), Hollin Meadows (HM), Fox Mill Estates (FME), Somerset-Olde Creek (SOC), and Laurel Hill (LH).
We are looking forward to a great season.
Please check this site frequently for any AST Red Tide Swim Team news!
NVSL Participation Waiver - We always required participation waivers but this year NVSL has instituted their own waiver form. We have incorporated this waiver into our registration process. No athlete will be permitted to participate in practice or a meet without a signed waiver on file.
NO WAIVER = NO PARTICIPATION = NO EXCEPTIONS
