Events and Programs

Sometimes swimming can feel like an individual sport but it’s not.  The AST Red Tides are a swim team.  But we need parent volunteers to help organize many of the events and programs that would help foster team spirit and bring the swimmers together as a team in and outside of the pool.

Buddy Program

Each year we assign “buddies” between the older and younger swimmers.  This year the coaches will be assigning "buddy groups".  The buddy groups will consist of a mix of older and younger swimmers.  The older buddies are there to assist their younger buddies in things like putting on their caps, acting as “legs” for back stroke, helping with stroke technique, and cheering for each other during swim meets.  Buddies can support each other by cheering for them or making a poster.  Some buddies do gift exchanges at meets.  It is not mandatory to exchange gifts but if you do choose to do this, keep the gifts limited, perhaps Gatorade or a small snack.  Buddies will not be members of the same swim family and we try to mix up the buddies so you do not have the same ones each year.

Friday Morning Breakfasts

Parent volunteers prepare swimmers hot breakfasts on Friday mornings during the season.  What a great way to start the day!  The breakfasts will start on June 21st, the Friday after school is out, and end on July 26th (6 breakfasts).   There is typically a special pancake breakfast that we will try to do in conjunction with our first Home A Meet.  Some of the items served with Friday Morning Breakfast include: fruits, juice, milk, bagels, french toast, doughnuts, and sausage.

Participation in the Friday Morning Breakfasts is completely optional and there is a fee associated with it.  The cost is $10/swimmer with a maximum of $20 per family (3 or more swimmers).

We have a number of home meets this season and need your help with concessions.  Each family is asked to contribute to the concessions with a case of Gatorade.  You can drop off your contribution in the pool board room right by the front desk.  We also need volunteers to set up and work concessions during the home meets.  Volunteer opportunities for concessions will be included in the sign up for each individual meet.

Pep Rallies & Cheers

We are planning for a Pep Rally every Friday night during the swim season.  With an A Meet the next morning swimmers are not allowed to swim Friday night but they can load up on pasta and carbs to prepare for the next day’s competition.  During Pep Rallies swimmers can chalk the sidewalks around the pool with words and pictures of encouragement and team spirit.  Towards the end of the season one Pep Rally will also be our Skit Night in which swimmers and Coaches can team up to show off different talents.

What's a Pep Rally and Swim Meet with out Cheers?  Click here to download cheers that we'll be chanting throughout the season.

Post A Meet Team Social

After our away A Meets we may get together at restaurants in the local area for a team social.  Thank you to Jennie Ly for coordinating this year's team socials!

Progressive Dinner

The Progressive Dinner is for our teens ONLY (13 and Up) and includes all AST teams (Swim, Dive and Tennis).  Swimmers have to be 13 during the swim season and swim in the 13 and Up categories.  AST teens will start at the pool and enjoy a multi-course meal that takes them progressively from one host family’s home to another until they end up back at the pool for dessert and a late night swim.

Participation in this event is completely voluntary and does require individual fees to participate, $15/swimmer.

Senior Day

Before we kick off the Home A Meet on July 13h, we’ll take a pause to recognize our graduating seniors and wish them luck as they go on to the next stage of their lives.  Be ready to cheer them on and to thank them for the leadership and mentoring they have provided to the younger swimmers!

Picture Day

On July 12th we’ll have picture night in conjunction with our Friday Night Pep Rally.  Picture order forms will be available at the pool front desk prior to picture day as well as on-site the day of.  Siblings can take pictures together.  Please make sure your swimmer has their team shirt for the team picture!

AST Banquet and Awards Ceremony

The AST Banquet and Awards Ceremony is a combined Swim, Dive, and Tennis event.  This event gives us an opportunity to celebrate both individual and team achievements from throughout the season.

We, as a team, cannot make it through the season without effective communication all around.  We know that there will be new families and families that do not speak English as their primary language – please do not allow this to stop you from speaking to the Coaches and Team Reps.  Veteran parents please help to introduce new parents or families that speak other languages to the Coaches and Team Reps, and help to ensure that the communication lines are open.
